Skinny Sketch: Curtis Coleman

As of this writing, Curtis has just recently completed eighth grade at a new school in Ontario, Canada. Eighth grade was a challenging year for Curtis, who has autism and often struggles with anxiety issues. He was given an iPad for learning support, but he had just started to explore some of the built-in accessibility features of the device when we spoke. For example, he sometimes uses the built-in text to speech to proofread what he has written.

For Curtis, it was a simple feature of the iPad we often take for granted that has made the biggest difference. As his mother explained when we spoke over video chat, Curtis loves to take photos. He is now learning to use this skill as an alternative way to take notes and save important information, including handouts and homework assignments.

This addresses Curtis’s challenge with executive functioning—his tendency to misplace or lose important information he needs to complete his schoolwork. It has also reduced the anxiety he often feels when he must ask for handouts, since now he can capture the information himself. Having a photo of the information the teacher has shared is also helpful to Curtis’s mom, who now has a better idea of what she needs to do at home to support Curtis with his schoolwork.

As Curtis’s experience shows, sometimes we don’t need an expensive app to make a difference in a learner’s life. Sometimes, just leveraging the microphone and camera of the iPad can provide a powerful solution to a learning challenge. We will explore the multimedia capabilities of the iPad in more detail in the next chapter.
